This mid-19th century Afghan Baluch rug presents a mesmerizing array of stepped diamond medallions arranged in a lattice pattern that seems to shimmer across the field. The color palette—rich madder red, deep indigo, camel, and soft ivory—forms a bold geometric composition framed by a finely detailed border of small-scale rosettes and protective amulets. It is a powerful piece of nomadic artistry that reflects both the spiritual and decorative motifs of the Turkmen tribes of northern Persia.

Woven on a wool foundation with a supple, pliable handle, the rug is in fair but structurally sound antique condition, with areas of wear, losses at both ends, and some visible repairs—most notably along the left edge and bottom kilim panel. These speak to a life well-lived, and give the rug a soulful authenticity that collectors and designers alike will appreciate.

This piece is ideal for a rustic cabin, eclectic study, or even a bohemian-inspired living room, where its strong graphic forms can serve as a grounding element in a layered space. It’s especially suited for floor use in lower-traffic areas, or as a striking wall display or gallery runner.

This rug comes from the private collection of a well-respected antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating rare and historically significant tribal weavings.
