Woven by Baluch tribes in Afghanistan in the late 19th century, this rug features an exquisite allover design of stylized diamonds and geometric forms. The central field is filled with connected, bold diamond shapes, each containing angular floral motifs, while the borders are framed with rhythmic tribal patterns. The rich, earthy tones of auburn, crimson, deep indigo, and pale ivory give this rug a sophisticated yet rustic feel, making it an eye-catching piece for any space.
Woven in wool on a wool foundation, this rug displays characteristic Baluch weaving techniques, with noticeable abrash and natural dye variations throughout the field, adding depth and charm. The rug’s flatwoven kilim ends and the contrasting colors in the borders create an intriguing visual contrast. There is some wear to the pile and edge fraying, but the structure remains solid, showcasing the durability of the piece.
This rug’s impressive size and bold design make it perfect for use as a statement piece in a living room, under a dining table, or as a dramatic hallway accent. Its authentic tribal character and beautiful color palette lend it timeless appeal for a variety of interior styles.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
shows a repair in the field (pictured).
