This handsome late 19th-century Afghan Baluch rug showcases a traditional tree-of-life variant rendered in staggered rows of stylized floral motifs. Woven in a classic brick-red field offset by deep indigo and midnight blue figures, the rug reflects the nuanced dye mastery and tribal aesthetic of the Baluch nomads of western Afghanistan.

The composition is anchored by twin columns of mirrored trees, each with finely drawn diamond-shaped blossoms, lending a sense of rhythm and movement. A series of intricate borders—featuring latch-hook patterns and alternating rosettes—frames the central panel and adds visual weight to the piece.

The palette here is especially warm and versatile, with rust, navy, and chocolate brown tones that complement both antique and contemporary interiors. This rug is in nice antique condition, with some age-related wear at the lower end and along the selvedges, and mild oxidation in the darker tones—characteristics that enhance the authenticity and charm of the piece.

This rug would make a lovely addition to a library, study, or reading nook, or could be hung as a wall tapestry to showcase its soft, graphic symmetry. Its medium size also allows for use layered over larger neutral carpets for a cozy, collected look.

This piece comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, and is a fine example of Afghan Baluch weaving from the late 19th century.
