This elegant Baluch tribal rug, woven in the border regions of Afghanistan in the late 19th century, features a field of stylized boteh motifs arranged in orderly rows on an ivory ground. The boteh, or flame/paisley form, is a long-standing symbol of fertility, protection, and enduring life in Persianate weaving traditions. Each motif is flanked by tiny tree-like appendages, creating a sense of movement and quiet symmetry that draws the viewer into its world of symbolic storytelling.

Woven in wool on a wool foundation using natural dyes, the rug retains its original flatwoven kilim ends with banded chevrons and rosette details. The piece remains in nice antique condition with areas of wear, some color bleeding, and a visible red dye run in the center—likely a result of early cochineal dye use. These imperfections only enhance its authenticity and charm, making it a great piece for those who value age-worn character.

Perfect for use as an accent rug, hung as wall art, or draped over a table or bench, this piece adds depth and quiet richness to both rustic and refined interiors.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
