This striking antique Afghan kilim was handwoven in the late 19th century by tribal weavers in northern Afghanistan, likely of Turkmen or Baluch origin. The rug’s composition alternates tightly patterned horizontal bands with dramatic ikat-style stripes, each rendered in a powerful palette of madder red, walnut brown, black, and ivory. Intricate geometric motifs and tribal symbols repeat across the surface with the measured rhythm of a well-practiced tradition.

Flatwoven in wool using the slit-weave tapestry technique, the rug shows extensive age-related wear throughout the field, with visible threadbare areas, abrash, and patina that speak to its long use in a tribal home. Despite the wear, the textile remains supple and structurally sound, retaining both its graphic impact and cultural integrity.

This piece would be ideal in a rustic or bohemian space—draped over a bench, used at the foot of a bed, or hung as a wall textile. Its bold geometry and evocative wear make it a powerful design element for those who appreciate timeworn beauty and handmade authenticity.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
