A charming 18th century New England six-board pine blanket box retaining its original or very early mustard grain-painted surface. The case is constructed in the classic form with overhanging lid, applied base molding, and interior till, exemplifying the practical joinery and straightforward rural design of the period. The untouched paint surface has mellowed beautifully over time, developing the warm ochre tones and soft abrasions that collectors look for in early American painted furniture.
The front and sides display a desirable curled grain decoration meant to imitate more expensive figured woods, a technique commonly used throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries in both rural and coastal communities. The proportions make this piece especially usable as a low coffee table, fireside storage, or at the foot of a bed, and the strong graphic quality of the paint integrates well across traditional, primitive, and modern country interiors.
In nice antique condition consistent with age and use. The surface shows expected wear to high points, small losses, and oxidized nail heads, all pleasing and honest signs of age. Interior till is present and functional. A wonderful example of period grain-painting with a great mustard tone and an appealingly untouched presentation. 19h x 47w x 19d
